For obvious reasons the London Underground isn’t at full capacity at the moment and the other evening I needed to use it to make a necessary trip, the exact purpose of which none of your business.
There was a squeaky escalator at Pimlico when I used to see my girlfriend home at night (at least, I think she was my girlfriend). It would play a complete symphony, different every time. I could have listened to it for hours.
I once got on an empty tube from Islington to Brixton. Last train. At one point an old guy got on and sat opposite me. He had maybe one tooth, matted long hair and many layers of very tatty and dirty clothes.
He burst into song. Something about his grandmother’s silken hose. Tears streamed down his cheeks. He ended the song just before the next stop and got off.
I feel like you, Rob Manuel, have created a record of a slice of our lives which has prompted this incredibly sad and poignant sharing.
Once, also on the Northern Line, another old man pissed out of his mind started singing old Irish songs. It was the absolute best. My brother joined in. The carriage qas crowded though. Most people nonplussed...others itching to be part of it (I imagine.)
I took the liberty of sticking it through a big old delay effect and mixing it with some dark ambient stuff I've been making during lockdown. https://youtu.be/npU5fToWvok
I love the idea of travelling into London to buy weed right now, not least because London feels like a distant memory. And also because I want weed.
What audio recorder did you use? I have a Zoom H5 but find that the noise floor is quite high for this sort of purpose (i.e. recording generally low level ambience). Love that unexplained and vaguely Tie-Fighteresque sound at 9:10 as you approach Camden Town Bank branch.
Love this! Am putting together a digital archive called Nothing Happens at the moment, where people send in sounds and images about the various nothings of this year - would be great to include this if you're interested
The type of Rolling Stock used as Designed in 1989, and Delivered after 1995/1996 time to the Northern and Jubilee Lines have some of the most Relaxing Sounds ever to have originated from an Underground Tube Train!! No other train beats it.

I feel like I've just read a lost passage from Nineteen Eighty-Four

Reassuring to know there are other sad bastards out there.
That is a lovely recording
