Can GPT-3 AI write comedy?
I've been playing with GPT-3 to see if it can automatically write comedy that makes me laugh - spoiler alert: it can
Over the last few years selected people have been allowed to play with GPT-3, an AI tool that’s great for spitting out text. Honestly I’ve been jealous as hell but finally, I learn via Matt Round, that the tool is now available to all.
To give you a quick tutorial it’s very easy:
go to https://beta.openai.com/playground and sign up for a free account and it’ll give you $18 credit to muck about
Just type some stuff into the big form on the ‘playground’ page, press generate and have fun
First off I’m interested to see if it can create jokes:
Well clearly it has the shape of a joke, but can it write some funny jokes about Simon le Bon?
Ok, they might not work as individual jokes but the obsession with cheese really did start making me laugh.
Secondly I’m curious if can it create news?
This is genuinely great. I’m laughing anyway. Fully understands the shape of news article and has just poured delightful silliness into it.
But can it create news not about Simon le Bon?
No problem. It also can do political news too.
Really at this stage there’s no reason that you couldn’t launch an Onion style website, assuming you had one good headline writer, and maybe edited the copy a little.
But can it create stories? Like a bit of a novel?
Oh yes it can.
I can’t stop playing with this thing. It does really terrible things - please take it away from me.
If you want to see more of me mucking about this, enjoy this Twitter thread where I took requests for news articles and fed them to the beast. Honestly, it’s the best fun I’ve had since the last time I enjoyed something.
Now you go off and play - and don’t be frightened that it’s doing you out of a job - it's content aware fill for writers.
Write the script for "I like my eggs ovariesy"
NARRATOR: Eggs are a breakfast classic, but sometimes they can be a little boring.
SARAH: Hey, have you tried eggs ovariesy?
JOE: No, what's that?
SARAH: It's eggs with a twist! I like to add a little bit of ovarian cancer to my eggs to make them a bit more interesting.
JOE: That sounds gross.
SARAH: Oh, come on, it's not that bad!
JOE: No, thank you. I'll stick with regular eggs.
